In TF V3 #38 Rachel writes about a story she heard when she adopted her
children. It is more than just a story. If my memory is correct, it is an
explanation from the Chasam Sofer, who explains why we have gentiles that
convert to Judaism and Jews who G-d forbid convert away from their
religion. And he explained that when Hashem offered the Torah to the other
nations and they refused, there were people that did want to accept it, so
their descendants later on became Jews, and there were amongst the Jewish
people those who did not want to truly accept the Torah and thus later down
the generations, a decendant of that individual went away from the Jewish
religion. Having heard this many many years ago, I don't remember precisely
the explanation, but this is the thrust of it.
