In TF V3 #32 Mark Duman asked about how they ignored Yom Kippur in order to
celebrate the dedication of the Temple. A number of different explanations
are offered by the commentators. Both the Radak and the Abarbanel say that
it was possible that they did not eat on that day. Additionally the
Abarbanel says that if they did eat, we must say that being that they were
prophets it must have been a "Horoas Sha'ah" - a directive for that
specific time. The Radak also states that they reasoned that since the
Princes brought sacrifices on Shabbos during the dedication of the
Tabernacle (in the desert) and violating Shabbos carries the most stringent
penalty, surely Yom Kippur when the punishment is only Kores (Spiritual
excision), it is superseded by the celebration of the dedication.
