Sukkos and Simchas Torah

The Sukkos Exhibit

Sukkos exist all over the world. Sukkos in different locations represent different aspects of local custom, and provide a colorful picture of Judaism as it exists around the world. Last year, we asked our subscribers, particularly those from more out of the way places, to send us (via snail-mail or digitally) pictures of their Sukkas, and we got a wonderful response. We've chosen a few of our favorites to show off! Enjoy and have a Good Yom Tov!

A picture of a Sukkah taken in Jerusalem, Israel, for a Chassidic Group. Note the large size and, if you look closely, you can even see the bleachers inside for the thousands of people who will crowd inside to celebrate the holiday together!
Thank you to the same photographer who sent us several other pictures from the religious neighborhood of Meah Shearim, Jerusalem. Although not exactly few and far between, they were too good to leave out.

And jumping to the other side of the globe, we take you to Aiea, Hawaii, where the sukkas are covered with the available palm leaves.

Mobile, Alabama, is proud to boast this beautiful Sukkah, as one of four or five in the entire town. Hurricane Georges, which passed through the area a few days before the holiday, made it very easy, as the family commented, to find the required roofing materials for a halachically kosher Sukkah. They also sent us a closeup of one of their Sukkah's panels.

". . .My husband and I live in Lake Charles, Louisiana, which is about 250 miles from New Orleans and 150 miles from Houston, Texas. Other Jewish families from Beaumont and Orange, Texas come to visit our Sukkah. Many persons who come have never had the opportunity to eat or sleep in a sukkah or to shake the lulav and etrog and do so for the first time. Every year it seems that something out of the ordinary always happens at Sukkot that makes the effort of building the sukkah so meaningful. . . ."

Merrick, NY, is a small community in Long Island, located near the Five Towns area. It has two Orthodox, two Conservative, and one Reform Synagogue, along with this beautiful Sukkah.

Moving in a north-easterly direction, we come to Oak Park, Michigan, where we find this artistically designed Sukkah. Note the large windows "glazed" with vinyl, and (not seen) the faux Jerusalem stone with penciled ivy climbing the painted outer walls. In their words, "the Sukkah of my wife's dreams. . ."

We have a selection of a few pictures of Spanish Sukkos, as we hop across the globe once more. Enjoy these pictures of Jews in Marbella, Spain, celebrating the holiday together.
