"The Way of G-d"

Part 2: “Divine Providence”, Chapter 2: “Mankind in this world”

Paragraph 7

There's yet another vitally important point to be made about one's place in The World to Come. In short, it's that each one of us chooses his or her own place there, as we'll see.

We're taught that there will be various levels to The World to Come; a wide variety of accommodations if you will. There will be higher, deeper, more luxurious ones; and lower, shallower, less luxurious ones.

There will necessarily be the very lowest level of all that one could ever occupy and still be in The World to Come, and to delight in G-d's Presence forever. And there will be levels only somewhat above that, and others far beyond it. The point is that one's accommodations will accord with the merits he or she would have accrued.

Now, by virtue of the fact that each one of us is responsible for his or her own spiritual status, and that we're each free enough to be as great or as lowly as we decide to be (as we said earlier on), it follows then that each one of us decides upon his or her own particular accommodations in The World to Come, whether we know it or not. And that no one is to be blamed or credited for our station there other than ourselves.

This series is dedicated to the memory of Yitzchak Hehrsh ben Daniel, and Sarah Rivka bas Yaakov Dovid.
