Chapter 129:1 The Month of Elul
1. In every Kaddish prayer recited from Rosh Hashana through Yom Kippur,
the word "le'eilah" ("above" or "beyond" - in the sentence which says that
G-d is beyond any blessing) is repeated, that is, one should say "le'eilah,
le'eilah.." (without the letter 'vav', as in "U'le'eilah). Since the
Kaddish prayer must contain [exactly] twenty-eight words [from "ye'hei
sh'mei rabbah" until "be'alma"], and during the rest of the year one says,
"le'eilah min kol birchasah.." ("He is beyond any blessing"), [and we are
adding the extra word "le'eilah," therefore, we have to remove one word]
and say "le'eilah, le"eilah mi'kol birchasah" (although we have removed the
word "min," the meaning is identical).
