48. The Service on the Day of Atonement - Avodas Yom ha-Kippurim
On Yom Kippur, besides the daily and additional
sacrifices the high priest brings a bull sin-offering
(which is burned) and a ram burnt-offering; and the
community brings two he-goats, one as a sin-offering (which
is burned) and one as the scapegoat (which is pushed off
a cliff in the desert). All of the sacrificial service on
that day is performed by the high priest, who also offers
incense in the holy of holies [as it says "Thus shall
Aaron enter the holy place... and the priest who shall
be anointed shall atone...]1; for those parts of the
service that are unique to that day he wears special linen
garments.a
